When children start using AI chatbots for their assignments, the important question is not just "allowed or not." What needs to be discussed more is how AI is used so that children continue to think, rather than just accepting ready-made answers.
Generative AI is a technology that can create text, images, summaries, or code based on user commands. Its capabilities are indeed useful for learning, but its answers can be incorrect, overly simplistic, or make children accustomed to skipping the process of understanding the material.
Therefore, parents do not need to choose between a total ban and complete allowance. A healthier approach is to treat AI like a discussion partner that needs to be checked—not a sole teacher and not a homework machine.
What is already known about AI and children's learning?
UNICEF assesses that AI has the potential to support more personalized learning, foster creativity, and enhance access for children with specific needs. However, UNICEF also warns of the risks of misinformation, bias, exposure to harmful content, and privacy issues when children input personal data into AI systems.
UNESCO also encourages the use of human-centered AI that is age-appropriate, safe, and remains supervised by educators. In its guidelines, UNESCO recommends a minimum age of 13 for independent use of generative AI tools in educational settings. This is a policy guideline, not to imply that all countries have the same legal rules. School rules and the terms of service of each application still need to be checked.
These facts indicate one thing: the benefits of AI do not automatically arise just because children have access. The outcomes heavily depend on the purpose of use, the quality of guidance, and the child's ability to verify information.
The biggest problem is not AI, but the habit of accepting answers
Imagine a child is assigned to explain the causes of flooding. They input the question into a chatbot, copy the answer, and then submit it. The assignment is complete, but there may not have been any learning process.
Such risks arise because AI can produce answers that sound convincing. A child who lacks basic knowledge will struggle to distinguish between correct, incomplete, or incorrect explanations. In simple terms, AI can be "confident" even when its information is wrong.
Another issue is dependency. If every difficulty is immediately handed over to AI, the child loses the opportunity to try, make mistakes, correct answers, and formulate ideas in their own words. In fact, those parts are what build thinking skills.
Use AI to ask questions, not just to request answers
Small changes in how commands are given can make AI use much more educational. Instead of asking "do this problem," children can be trained to use AI to get hints.
- Understanding concepts: "Explain fractions with an example of dividing a cake for fifth graders."
- Finding errors: "Check my calculation steps. Don't just give the final answer."
- Practicing: "Create five practice questions about ecosystems, ranging from easy to difficult."
- Testing understanding: "Ask questions one at a time and wait for my answer."

Parents do not need to test like teachers. Just ask light questions, such as:

- "Why do you believe this information is correct?"

- "If the AI answer is wrong, which part might be incorrect?"
If the child can explain, provide examples, and show comparison sources, the likelihood of their learning process being more meaningful increases. If they only say "because AI said so," that is a sign that the tool is replacing the thinking process.
Teach fact-checking with a three-step method
Children do not need to be technology experts to learn how to check information. Use the following simple habits:
- Compare with other sources. Check textbooks, school websites, encyclopedias, or official sources. Do not rely on a single AI answer for important facts.
- Pay attention to dates and context. Information about figures, rules, prices, applications, or recent events can change. Old answers may not necessarily align with the current situation.
- Differentiate facts and opinions. The statement "water boils at a certain temperature under certain conditions" is different from "this learning method is the best." The latter requires reasoning and context.
These habits are not only useful when using AI. Children will also be better prepared to face short videos, social media posts, and chain messages that seem convincing.
Protect personal data from the start
Chatbots are not a place to input full names, home addresses, phone numbers, passwords, document photos, health information, or personal stories about friends and family. Children need to understand that "just to help answer" is not a reason to share all information.
For school assignments, change sensitive data into general examples. For instance, use "Student A" instead of a classmate's name. If an application requests an account, parents should check the minimum age, privacy policy, and whether conversations can be saved or used for service development.
What families can do this week
Start with one short session, not a long lecture. Choose an assignment the child is working on, then conduct an experiment together:
- Ask the child to answer the question with their own knowledge first.
- Use AI to request explanations or alternative perspectives.
- Compare the child's answer and the AI's answer.
- Find one part that needs verification.
- Ask the child to write a conclusion in their own words.
From here, families can make specific agreements: when AI can be used, for what purposes, what data should not be entered, and how AI use needs to be noted if requested by teachers.
The goal of education is not to produce seemingly perfect assignments, but to build children who are capable of understanding, questioning, and making decisions.
